BMW INPA vs Rheingold

Topic 1: BMW INPA and Rheingold, which one should need?

All Rheingold versions have native support for Ediabas 7.x, this option just needs to be activated from istagui config file. I can check the parameter later. This means that K+DCAN can be used directly with Rheingold, as long as the Ediabas (which comes with BMW Standard Tools) is configured for this interfaces. Setting for Ediabas.ini can be found in Rheingold settings, under VCI tab (if the config file has been configured correctly). If the interface works with INPA or Tool32, then it works with Rheingold too.
ADS interface is not supported, as Rheingold requires Ediabas 7.x, and only Ediabas 6.x and older has ADS support. So to use Rheingold with ADS cars, ICOM is mandatory. ADS cars are E36, E34, beginning of E38 production and all chassis models that are older than these. E39, E46 and later E38, and all chassis models made after these are equipped with K-line or D-CAN, so K+DCAN cable (combinated interface that has both K-line and D-CAN) is good for these cars. F-series cars can useK+DCAN for diagnosis and ENET for diagnosis + coding and programming.
There are 20-pin connectors in engine compartment on all cars made approximately before year 2000, even if they have OBD-2 connector too. If there are both of these connectors available, then 20-pin must be used as OBD-2 is then connected only to DME/DDE and EGS. 20-pin connector type is K-line or ADS, depending on the chassis model. If it is K-line, then K+DCAN and obd-20pin adapter can be used.
There is also ADS interface available, it can be used with INPA on ADS cars. It can be found from E-bay, and it is called Tiny ADS. This ADS thing talks directly to COM-port i/o memory addresses, so laptop must have native COM port. USB-COM adapter will not work, period. Of course ICOM can handle these cars via ethernet connection, even with INPA. To configure ICOM to work with Ediabas, I-tool radar is used to check ICOM ip address and then EasyConnect can be used to configure ediabas and to lock the ICOM.

Note: How to activate Ediabas support in Rheingold:
Open ISTAGUI.exe.config with notepad
find line with parameter BMW.Rheingold.OperationalMode
change it to this:
<add key=”BMW.Rheingold.OperationalMode” value=”ISTA_PLUS”>

Topic 2: Which for diagnosis, and which for coding, programming?

If you want meaningful Diagnosis in English, for both E-Series and F-Series cars, you need ISTA/D (Rheingold) and you can request it here:
http://www.obdexpress.co.uk/wholesale/bmw-icom-software-hdd-ista-d-ista-p.html
For Coding, you need different Tools, NCS Expert / SP-Daten for E-Series and E-Sys / PSdZData for F-Series.
All Diagnosis and Coding can be done with cheap DCAN Cable for E-Series and cheap ENET Cable for F-Series.
For Programming (Flashing ECU’s with new Firmware), then you need ISTA/P for for both E-Series and F-Series cars, or you can use WinKFP for E-Series and E-Sys for F-Series. For E-Series Programming, you will need an ICOM, but for F-Series Programming, you can use ENET Cable.

Topic 3: INPA and ISTA/D (Rheingold), which one better?

ISTA/D (aka Rheingold) is the current dealership diagnostic software for all Exx and Fxx cars. ISTA/D is the replacement for older dealership DIS diagnostic software. Likewise, ISTA/P is the replacement for older delaership SSS Progman programming software. ISTA/P & ISTA/D are designed to be used with an ICOM Interface, and with full ICOM-A-B-C, you can connect to older cars. The ICOM “C” Connection is for the older BMW ADS 20-pin round “Pacman” connector in Engine Bay. You can find versions of ISTA/D with an ICOM Emulator builtin, that allows you to use it with an ENET Interface for Fxx cars and a DCAN Interface for Exx cars. I don’t know for sure, as I do not do any Exx work, but I doubt ICOM Emulator would work for older ADS connector.
INPA (interpreter for test procedures) is older factory floor diagnostic software, designed to run test procedures. While INPA can be set for English User Interface, most of the Test Procedures, which can be difficult to find, are in German.
Between the two, ISTA/D is simply a better option. It has a modern interface, is 100% English (or available in a multiple other languages), and is complete in that it does not require additional Test Procedures.
You can have ISTA/P & ISTA/D installed on a laptop aside INPA, WinKFP, and INPA without any issues.

How to switch K+DCAN cable 7&8 pin for K-Line or Dcan connection

How to use/switch/connect to K-Line or Dcan pin 7&8? I have one of those K+DCAN USB cables and I am confused about how to switch the modes of it. Here are good tips i found, of the switch-mode k+dcan usb cable user manual. All i’ve collected just for education.

I assume the reasons being that on DCAN cars one pin is used for a ethernet connection and the other to the K data line – on K line cars, both pins are connected to K data lines and that creating a switch mode circuit would cost more than the interface is worth. The 2 most sensible options are both hardware-related:-
  1. Use an adapter (such as the one sold by One Stop electronics) which internally bridges pins 7 & 8 or,
  2. Mount a small switch on the OBD plug end of your adapter, which can bridge (for K line) or separate (for DCAN) the connection between pins 7 & 8.

– So you have to physically connect (K-Line) or disconnect (DCAN) pin 7&8?
– Yes, I think connection by soldering is a bad option as it limits the usefulness of the interface, I have an adapter but consider a switch to be a better option.

– Is there anything else to do for switching from K-Line to DCAN then disconnecting pin 7&8? Unfortunately I don’t have a DCAN model available.
– As soon as you connect the interface to the car and your computer, run DCAN.exe to configure the comms rate. I have only used my K+DCAN interface with DCAN cars.

– Is it necessary to do so every time I want to use DCAN or is the interface staying in DCAN mode once I ran DCAN.exe?
– You only need to run it when you are switching between modes. If you run it the first time you connect to a DCAN car, your computer will retain the settings.

– How do I switch back to K-Line? Just by connecting the two pins or is further action on the computer required?
– Earlier e39 had both the OBD port in the cabin and the round 20 pin connector under the hood.

The OBD port only allowed access to limited modules, I think only the DME in fact.

I always switch my K+D CAN adapter between K and D CAN protocols as I need to, depending on the car that I’m connecting to.
I use the DOS version of the DCAN utility. As mentioned if you only use the adapter on the e39, run the utility once and set the adapter to K CAN and leave it at that.

In fact thinking about it I use the same adapter for INPA, DIS and ISID.

With these K DCAN cables there are two subtle different versions, one with pin 8 enabled, one with it disabled. The one with it disabled is ideal for e90 newer than 03/07 & that era, these leads often come with a black adapter to re-enable the pin 8 (by just tying it to pin 9) so it will also be suitable for e46/e39/e63 etc. The ones with pin 8 active are just older versions of the cable. Worst cast scenario you just need to modify the cable & stuck a switch on it to toggle pin 8 on/off as needed.

Finally there are a lot of rubbish adapter cables out there. Finding a good one can be tricky.

– I have a 2003 E39 so there is no OBD1 anymore. How do you switch the modes physically? Do you use such a adapter to connect Pin 7&8?
– If you don‘t plan to use the cable on any cars that have DCAN(2007+) then you can pop open the case and solder a jumper between them. When you do this the DCAN functionality will no longer work though.

How to use the ICOM multiplexer with the MOST port?

What is BMW ICOM?
ICOM refers to Integrated Communication Optical Module.
The ICOMs are the interfaces for the repair of BMW and MINI vehicles recommended by BMW. The ICOM is specifically designed for BMW and MINI vehicles. The ICOM incorporates powerful
processors and a high storage capacity. This allows for faster communication than with a PTT.
Nowadays, there are three versions of ICOM hardware: ICOM AICOM A2ICOM A3ICOM A3 pro

What is a ICOM kit?
There are three different ICOM components available. These can handle all vehicles of the BMW
Group:
  • ICOM A for OBD communication
  • ICOM B, in combination with the ICOM A, for MOST communication
  • ICOM C, in combination with the ICOM A, for 20 PIN diagnostic connector.

How to connect ICOM to OBD interface?
Connect ICOM A directly to the computer's unused network port. No other equipment or multiple port hubs should be connected between the ICOM and the computer. Connect the ICOM A OBD connector to the OBD socket in the vehicle. The ICOM A OBD connector can be folded to an angle to adapt it for use in the wide variety of OBD socket locations encountered in various vehicles.

How to use the ICOM multiplexer with the MOST port?
The supplementary ICOM B module will also be required to connect the vehicle's MOST port. Proceed by attaching the USB ports from ICOM A and ICOM B to the USB cable. Then connect ICOM A directly to the computer's unused network port. Complete the process by connecting ICOM B to the vehicle's MOST port through the MOST connector while also plugging the ICOM A OBD connector into the vehicle's OBD socket. If the system subsequently fails to recognize the MOST port or the ICOM, please repeat the process. How to connect ICOM mux to 20 Pin adapter on the vehicle?
Connect the ICOM to the network port on the PC first. Then connect the ICOM C to the ICOM A. Finally, connect the ICOM C to the vehicle 20 Pin diagnostic connector.

How long should you take to communicate with ICOM emulator?
Waiting period for recognition of an ICOM It can take up to 15 minutes before an ICOM is detected after the connection to the PC. It is advisable to connect the ICOM immediately after boot up of the PC, and then start the OSS software..

What are the compatible software?

How do people think of the newest ICOM firmwares?
BMW ICOM A3 for vehicles with OBD access receives a significantly more powerful processor and more storage capacity.
Robust aluminium case will help to avoid damage when using in harsh environments.

i checked the firmware; it’s the new version 1.4.0. So, two points i wanna say:
First, it is ICOM A2 with build in usb-ethernet adapter.
Second, it is K+DCAN interface built in A2 casing.

Icom a3 - can programme all units - but not media. I am planing to buy A2. As i know - the only difference with A1 - there is no "swimming" connector - that can be broken, and soon begin to look like sh*t with isolation tape. This is not series when you do F-series))) so, Buy ICOM A2 with most connector - and you will become a great BMW master (+ few years of learning needed)

(Fixed) BMW E90 errors Winkpf errors after update MRS

This post starts with the errors that I have in MRS (airbags and seatbelts) after I updated MRS module using WinKpf. Finally I got it fixed, how to do? Go on reading following parts.

Tool I use:
WinKpf
Btw, I bought from
http://www.obdexpress.co.uk/wholesale/icom-hdd-with-engineer-programming-no-usb-dongle.html

What I did:
I updated MRS module using WinKpf

Issue:
I have errors in MRS (airbags and seatbelts), I used tool32 (sfz.prg / systemzeit_starten) but no luck. I've heard that is possible to reset system time using ISTA/D to fix it. But I couldn't find it.
I updated CAS because of error with ELV steering blocks problem. And after that I wanted to update rest of module.
I've heard that I should use NCS to coding new version of MRS.
Finally, Solved!!!
It's working properly, I've done:
Detei-> Profil laden -> Expert mode -> VIN/ZCS/FA ->ZCS/Fa f. ECU -> E89 -> CAS -> BACK -> Process ECU -> ABG -> (SG Codieren) Excute job.
Note: It doesn't matter if you choose CAS or FRM, very important is expert mode profile. Once you load this, go for updated module and choose job sg_codieren. It wil code module to factory data setup.
